Video calls built from scratch for a fitness platform
A fitness startup for the Ukrainian market, aiming to go global, needed video training inside its app — but ready-made video services were expensive and lacked React Native support. I built the app from scratch, including our own video call system on mediasoup, WebRTC and protoo, Fondy payments, several sign-in methods, actionable push notifications and localization. The MVP was shown to the client in two months and won a new project.
The problem
The product was a fitness app for the Ukrainian market, built with the plan to expand globally later. Its core was live training with a coach, so video calls had to be part of the app itself.
Ready-made video call services were expensive and lacked React Native support, so the team decided to build calls in-house.
What I did
- Built the project from scratch, including the choice of technologies and architecture, so it could scale with the product.
- Built our own video call system on mediasoup and WebRTC, with a WebSocket layer written for it on protoo. The team owned the whole call flow instead of renting it.
- Integrated Fondy payments, keeping them secure and simple for users.
- Several ways to sign up: Google, Apple and anonymous registration.
- Push notifications with their own handling logic: a notification can trigger a specific action in the app, not just open it.
- Localization in Ukrainian, English and other languages, ready for the global plan.
- A UI kit for fast, consistent screens.
- Web onboarding to bring more users into the app.
Result
- The MVP was shown to the client in 2 months and won a new project.
- Web onboarding increased user activity and brought in new clients.
